On today’s date (06-12-19), at approximately 12:10pm, the New Braunfels Police Department and New Braunfels Fire Department were called to the Main Plaza of New Braunfels for reports of an 18-wheeler rollover accident.
Officers arrived and found the truck on its side in the outside lane of traffic near the Plaza/South Seguin Ave. outlet from the traffic circle. The driver of the truck, a 50-year old male from New Braunfels, was uninjured in the crash. Traffic around the Main Plaza was rerouted to side streets in the downtown area, causing significant traffic delays for about 4 hours until the roadway was re-opened at approximately 4:10pm.
The 18-wheeler was hauling approximately 50,000-pounds of flour and so it took a total of 4 large wreckers to eventually right the truck before it could be towed from the scene. Additionally, there was a moderate amount of fluids that leaked from the rig of the truck following the crash, which was then cleaned up by New Braunfels Fire crews.
The New Braunfels Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the crash, and preliminary results indicate that the speed of the truck was a factor in the 18-wheeler rolling over. The investigation continues and charges may be pending.
The New Braunfels Police Department would like to thank area drivers for their patience during this incident and the resulting traffic delays. Additionally, NBPD would like to recognize the teamwork exhibited by the multiple wrecker crews that worked together on this incident to safely right the truck and remove it from the roadway.
