2021 ICC Code Adoption
Overview
On October 9, 2023, New Braunfels City Council approved to amend Chapters 14 and 54 of the City's Code of Ordinances to adopt the 2021 International Building Codes. The updated codes went into effect on October 23, 2023. The ICC codes are model codes that provide minimum requirements for building design, construction, and operation to protect the public health, safety, and the natural resources that sustain us. Building codes offer protection against the threats of natural disasters and weather changes to make our communities more resilient, sustainable, and livable for generations to come. The development of these codes at the national level is unique in how it brings together interested parties to participate and decide what is needed and feasible for the construction of new buildings. The following International Codes have been adopted:
- 2021 International Building Code
- 2021 International Residential Code
- 2021 International Fire Code
- 2021 International Existing Building Code
- 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code
- 2021 International Property Maintenance Code
- 2021 International Energy Conservation Code
- 2020 National Electrical Code
- 2021 International Plumbing Code
- 2021 International Electrical Code
- 2021 International Mechanical Code
- 2021 International Fuel Gas Code
Go to the International Code Council's website to learn more about each code. See the adopted codes and local amendments online.
Every three years code professionals, designers, building officials, builders, and material suppliers work together to assess the technology landscape and consumer demand, and democratically create a model code that applies innovation gradually across the building sector, reducing risk for individual builders, contractors, and owners. However, model codes are effective only if enacted and enforced by state and local governments. Updated model codes benefit the communities that use them. Ultimately, jurisdictions that choose to enforce the most current codes demonstrate that they are forward thinking and open to change that improves lives.
