Recycling...Made Easy!
How To Recycle...
Batteries
The City of New Braunfels does not provide recycling services for most battery types—batteries are NOT permitted in your recycle cart. When not disposed of properly, discarded batteries contribute to fires in trucks, landfills, and recycling centers.
Check local retailers or search online to find options for battery recycling. All batteries can be safely recycled at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events. Follow the City events calendar to stay up to date on all special events and drop-off days or download the CONB Waste Mobile App.
For more information on how to properly dispose of your batteries, head to Call2Recycle.
Battery Information
Single-Use Batteries
- Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
- Silver Oxide: These button batteries are often found in watches. These batteries contain mercury and should not be disposed of in the landfill.
- Lead Acid Batteries: These batteries power the engines of cars, boats, etc. They are extremely toxic and must be recycled. Fortunately, many automotive shops accept the old battery when you purchase a new battery. You can also bring them to Household Hazardous Waste events.
Rechargeable Batteries
- Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
- Nickel-cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride & Lithium Ion - These batteries can be purchased as a substitute for alkaline manganese batteries but also represent the batteries found in your cell phone, cordless power tools, and other cordless electronic devices.
Electronics
Where Can I Recycle Electronics Locally?
Several local electronics retailers accept various electronics for recycling, or electronics can often be donated to charity organizations. Remember to clear any personal data before donating or recycling electronic devices. In Texas, local businesses partner with manufacturers to provide electronics recycling as required by state law. These locations accept various electronics from consumers once personal data has been removed.
To find more information and a nearby location, visit the TCEQ website and the Texas Recycles Computers website.
Comal County residents may contact (830) 643-3781 for recycling information.
The City of New Braunfels currently offers one, free Electronics Drop-Off event in January each year. Follow the City events calendar to stay up to date on all special events and drop-off days or download the CONB Waste Mobile App.
Plastic Foam
Please Note: Only white plastic foam is accepted!
The City of New Braunfels accepts completely white plastic foam at its drop-off location - City Recycle Center, 488 S. Castell Ave.
The type of plastic foam currently accepted is called expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly identified with the #6 code. If it is not clearly marked with the #6 emblem, it will likely not be accepted.
All foam MUST be free of food residue, tape, labels, and any other items that might be attached to the foam.
Bring foam in a bag or container that can be easily and quickly emptied.
Plastic Bags
Do not place plastic bags, plastic film, or shrink wrap into your blue recycle cart. Plastic bags are not recyclable through the curbside recycling service or at the City Recycle Center. These bags become entangled in the sorting machinery at the material recovery facility where recyclables are sorted.
Please take your plastic bags to local retailers, such as HEB, Target, Best Buy, or Walmart, for recycling. These locations have a drop-off recycling bin or barrel near their entrances just for plastic bags.
To reduce waste, consider using reusable bags at the grocery store instead of single-use plastic bags. Reusing plastic bags you do accumulate can also be a great alternative to disposal.
Mattress Disposal & Recycling
The City of New Braunfels provides disposal (landfill) services for mattresses at Bulky Goods Drop-Off events and by scheduling of curbside bulk pick up services.

Composting and Mulching at Home
Home Composting
Composting is a great way to create fertile soil for your lawn or garden. It also saves room in your trash cart! Backyard and vermicomposting (using worms) are two simple options. Check out these resources:
- Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) - guide on Mulching and Composting

Mulching
Proper mulching helps plants stay hydrated and can complement composting. Leaving grass and leaf clippings on your lawn saves you the time and effort of bagging them. The clippings contain beneficial nutrients and help your lawn retain moisture. Try using a mulching lawnmower to create finely ground clippings!
