Batteries

08-01_Keep_Batteries_Out_SOCIAL2 (1)The City of New Braunfels does not provide recycling services for most battery types—batteries are NOT permitted in your recycle cart. When not disposed of properly, discarded batteries contribute to fires in trucks, landfills, and recycling centers.

Check local retailers or search online to find options for battery recycling.  All batteries can be safely recycled at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events. Follow the City events calendar to stay up to date on all special events and drop-off days or download the CONB Waste Mobile App.

Battery Information

Single-Use Batteries

  • Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
  • Silver Oxide: These button batteries are often found in watches. These batteries contain mercury and should not be disposed of in the landfill.
  • Lead Acid Batteries: These batteries power the engines of cars, boats, etc. They are extremely toxic and must be recycled. Fortunately, many automotive shops accept the old battery when you purchase a new battery. You can also bring them to Household Hazardous Waste events.

Rechargeable Batteries

  • Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
  •  Nickel-cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride & Lithium Ion - These batteries can be purchased as a substitute for alkaline manganese batteries but also represent the batteries found in your cell phone, cordless power tools, and other cordless electronic devices.
