On today’s date (07-08-2022), at approximately 2:05am, the New Braunfels Police Department was dispatched to the Rivertree subdivision for multiple Burglaries of Motor Vehicles in progress. The suspect was startled by one of the victims and ran. Witnesses observed the suspect get into a vehicle and leave the area. Officers observed the vehicle leaving the Rivertree subdivision and attempted to initiate an investigative stop in the 900 block of Hwy 46 South, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed heading south on Hwy 46 South (towards Seguin).

The vehicle attempted to make a right turn onto Mary’s Blvd but was unable to negotiate the turn and struck a metal utility pole head on. As the vehicle began to catch on fire, officers were able to remove the suspect from the vehicle, but the suspect was unconscious and not breathing. Officers began CPR until EMS arrived; however, life saving measures were unsuccessful and the suspect was pronounced deceased. Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Sheryl Sachtleben was contacted and no autopsy was ordered.

The suspect has been identified as a 15-year-old male resident of New Braunfels and next of kin has been notified. The suspect was the only occupant of the vehicle. No officers were injured in this incident. The NBPD Traffic Unit and Criminal Investigations Division responded to the location to conduct the preliminary investigation. Hwy 46 South was closed for approximately 3 hours and reopened at approximately 5:15am.
