On today’s date (03-16-23), at approximately 1:45am, the New Braunfels Police Department and New Braunfels Fire Department were called to the 1000 block of FM 306, near the intersection with Hunter Road, for reports of a major motor vehicle accident involving two pickup trucks.
Officers arrived to find two Dodge Ram pickup trucks that had collided head on – a white Dodge Ram that was traveling north on FM 306 and a black Dodge Ram that was traveling south on FM 306.
The driver of the white truck, identified as 41-year old Reva Garza of New Braunfels, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified.
Three people were inside the black pickup truck at the time of the crash. Two passengers, a 19-year old male from Waelder, Texas, and a 25-year old male from Weimar, Texas, were both transported to level 1 trauma centers in the area, both in critical but stable condition. The driver of the black truck, 21-year old Juan Sebastian Vargas of
Waelder, Texas, was transported to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital New Braunfels and medically cleared following the crash. A blood search warrant was then issued and, following the blood draw, Vargas was transported to the Comal County Jail where he was charged with a single count of Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle causing Serious
Bodily Injury. This incident remains under investigation and additional charges may be pending.
The NBPD Traffic Unit responded to the scene and closed that section of FM 306 for approximately 4 hours while they conducted a full accident reconstruction investigation and cleared the scene of debris.
