Beginning October 7th, 2024, the City of New Braunfels Fire Station #5 will be undergoing major renovations, prompting the temporary relocation of Fire Department personnel and equipment. Located at 1250 West County Line Road, Fire Station #5 was originally built to be the Fire Department’s administration building in 1987. Nearly 40 years later, it now needs a number of health and safety improvements in order to bring that fire station up to current National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standards and to make quality of life improvements for the personnel stationed there.
This $2.2-million project will add on three additional areas to the original structure that will house a storage room for firefighter gear and personal protective equipment (PPE), a maintenance room where gear can be properly cleaned and sanitized without spreading possible contaminates, and a workout room with weights and other gym equipment. Also included in this renovation: parking lot upgrades, fencing, a backup generator, new bay doors, and a remodeled living and kitchen area.
In order to expedite the renovation process, all Fire Station #5 personnel, equipment, and apparatus will temporarily relocate for the length of the project, which is expected to last approximately six months, with weather and other factors permitting. During that time, the NBFD personnel that are normally assigned to Fire Station #5, along with a fire engine and an ambulance, will instead be housed at Fire Station #2, located at 159 South Water Lane. Despite that temporary relocation, the impact on response times is expected to be minimal, with the closest units always responding first, based on availability.
Following the expected completion of the project in the Spring of 2025, New Braunfels residents will be invited to a re-opening ceremony.
