Heavy Rains Prompt Temporary Closure of Access to Comal River for Recreation

Media Releases Posted on July 05, 2025

Update (4:15pm): Both the Comal River and the Guadalupe River have started to recede. But please continue to monitor weather conditions and use caution. The City continues to urge all residents and visitors to avoid all river recreation and remain alert to changing conditions, especially near low-lying areas, riverbanks, and creek beds.

City crews are also working to reopen roads as water levels recede. ROAD CLOSURE UPDATES: www.newbraunfels.gov/roadclosures

Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Never drive through water-covered roads or around barricades.

-----

Original Release: Heavy rains have caused an increased flow of water and a decrease in water clarity on the Comal River, with additional rains expected to cause further deterioration of river conditions.

Therefore, effective immediately by order of the Chief of Police, access to the Comal River in New Braunfels for recreation is temporarily closed. City officials will reevaluate river conditions on Sunday morning to determine when river recreation can resume.

In addition to the Comal River access closure, the City of New Braunfels is also closing Guadalupe River access at River Acres Park and Cypress Bend Park.

Residents and visitors are highly encouraged to avoid all river recreation on both the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers and to stay weather aware in areas along local rivers and creek beds.

Additional City of New Braunfels Closures

Due to heavy rainfall, the following City of New Braunfels facilities will be closed today (Saturday, 07/05/25):

  • Landa Park Aquatic Complex (includes Spring Fed Pool)

It should be noted that forecasters with the National Weather Service are predicting additional thunderstorm possibilities and those ongoing weather factors will play a role in future decisions made by city officials.
