The City of New Braunfels now has five facilities that provide sensory-friendly resources for those in the community that have sensory-related needs. Through a partnership with KultureCity, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sensory inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory processing disorders, the City of New Braunfels has sensory-friendly resources available at the following locations:
- Das Rec
- Fischer Park Nature Education Center
- Landa Recreation Center
- New Braunfels Public Library – Main Branch
- New Braunfels Public Library - Westside Branch & Westside Community Center
These resources, called sensory bags, are filled with items that can help lessen sensory overload for both children and adults. They include items like noise-reducing headphones, strobe reduction glasses, visual cue cards, fidget toys, weighted lap pads, and VIP lanyards.
“Sensory needs are a common medical condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. One in four individuals has a sensory need, including those with PTSD, autism, dementia, or those who have suffered strokes,” said New Braunfels Public Library Director Cole Johnson. “It’s our goal to be more inclusive by creating innovative opportunities that promote health, conservation, play, and community growth. Having these resources at our facilities allows more and more residents to enjoy the events, programs, and facilities offered by the City of New Braunfels.”
