The iconic Henne Hardware building has a vibrant history, spanning across three centuries and over 130 years. Built in 1893 by local contractor Christian Herry for Louis Henne, this remarkable building stands as an example of Victorian architecture in the heart of the New Braunfels downtown business district. Louis Henne began his career as an entrepreneur at the age of 17 when he took over his father’s tinsmith business following his death in 1857. Louis later renamed the tinsmith business as Louis Henne Co., Tin & Sheet Iron Ware, Stoves, House Furnishing Goods, and Mitchell Wagons. As the years passed, Louis expanded his ventures, opening a lumber yard and a plumbing business. While not all these original sites exist today, the Henne Hardware building is a testament to the construction methods and materials of that time. The Henne building retains much of its original charm, both inside and out. With brick walls, wood floors, and a pressed tin ceiling, the interior showcases the ornate details typical of Victorian architecture. Original display cases, revolving cabinets, and nail bins remain, offering a glimpse into the past. The tangible elements along with the historic images of this exhibit not only highlight the craftsmanship of the time, but also tells the story of a business that grew alongside New Braunfels, adapting to the needs of a community and leaving a lasting legacy.
