As the 2018-2019 school year begins, the New Braunfels Independent School District and the City of New Braunfels Police Department have teamed up to offer a new level of security for campuses across the district. Students, parents, teachers, and staff will see a variety of new security features during this year, including the new School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) program for the district’s Middle School and High School campuses. This program is the result of a partnership between the NBISD and NBPD and provides a uniformed New Braunfels Police Officer on those campuses every single day of the school year.
“The addition of S.R.O.’s this year is a result of a great working relationship that NBISD has with NBPD. We look forward to having them on campus this school year to not only enhance our security, but improve community relations and overall student success,” said New Braunfels ISD Superintendent Randy Moczygemba.
NBPD Chief of Police Tom Wibert added, “We are very excited to be working so closely with the NBISD on implementing this program. These School Resource Officers have been purposefully selected by the Police Department for their ability to work with a wide range of citizens, including youth, and they have received specialized training for being the first point of contact for security issues on a school campus.”
Officer Eric Cuellar (a 19-year NBPD veteran) has been assigned to Oak Run Middle School, Officer James Allison (an 8-year NBPD veteran) has been assigned to New Braunfels Middle School, Officer David Olson (a 16-year NBPD veteran) has been assigned to the 9th Grade Center, and Officer Coty Butcher (a 12-year NBPD veteran) has been assigned to New Braunfels High School. Two other officers, Lucian Braan and Jeff Simmons, have been selected as back-up officers should the need arise.
These officers’ daily duties will include patrolling their respective campuses, providing a proactive law enforcement presence on the campus, and fostering positive relationships with students, teachers, and other campus staff.
